Great Furniture on the Cheap – How I built a Workstation From a Door and File Cabinets

Here’s how I built my computer workstation with a few simple elements. It’s big, comfortable, easy to get to equipment and came out looking pretty sharp.

The core pieces are an uncut door, files cabinets and table legs from Ikea.

The monitor stand is 11 x 30 inches held up with 2 x 4s. I stained both the same color.

The leg plates are fastened to the door so the legs can easily be unscrewed from the plate. The files cabinets were not tall enough so a piece of plywood fills the gap.

The two file cabinets are not the exact same height, but finding just the right size lumber makes the desk perfectly level. You have to look very closely to see that the file cabinets are not identical and that there is a spacer.

Wire cages hide the wires nicely yet keeps everything pretty accessible. I got these from Ikea.

Here it is with all the components hooked up. Notice how the 8 usb wires are tucked away. I also can slide my keyboard and mouse under the monitor stand to have plenty of space to draw.

There is plenty of room behind the monitor stand for external hard drives. Here I keep my Time Machine drive and 1 TB My Book Mirror Edition hooked up to a Pogoplug so I can access it remotely.

Having a small powerstrip on the top of the desk comes in real handy.

Here are the wire cages with all the wires in place. There is a power strip in each one.

As you can see the wires are completely hidden for a really clean look.
